Arcana Alchemy: The Magician

This series, “Arcana Alchemy”, will highlight each Major Arcana card individually - this specific post is dedicated to the Major Arcana card #1 - The Magician. Missed the first Major Arcana card -The Fool ( 0)? Read it here!

The information provided below stems from a combination of books, Tarot Decks, and my own personal experience with the cards (books & decks are cited at the bottom of this post). However, it’s my belief that the meaning & archetype of each Tarot card is fluid and living, it changes - reading to reading, day to day, century to century. The most important meaning of each card is the one YOU interpret in the moment, as Tarot is and always will be a tool to help you connect with your intuition.

In standard tarot decks there are 78 cards. Of the 78 cards in a tarot deck, 22 of them are labeled Major Arcana. These 22 cards are labeled “major” because they are often interpreted to represent the divine and universal cycles that humanity repeats through its own existence. Each card in the Major Arcana depicts a different archetype, journey, or phase in the human experience. All 22 cards are foundational and full of meaning not only individually, but also in relation to each other.

The cards in the Major Arcana are numbered from 0 to 21, beginning with The Fool and ending with The World. When you lay the Major Arcana out next to each other, it becomes clear that the cards depict a journey or path, often referred to as "The Fool’s Journey," where the figure of The Fool starts as an innocent wanderer and gradually gains wisdom and experience through encounters with different archetypes represented by the other Major Arcana cards. However, this is just one lens of viewing the Major Arcana and it’s important to note that often times our human journey is non-linear and is constantly cycling.

Another way of viewing the Major Arcana, is to attribute each Major Arcana card as a “part” of oneself. This lens is inspired by Internal Family Systems (IFS), a therapeutic model developed by Dr. Richard Schwartz in the 1980s, an idea that the psyche is made up of different "parts," each with its own personality, emotions, and coping mechanisms. Every part interacts with each other and influences our behavior. It is my strong conviction that Tarot mirrors, not predicts, what we are thinking and feeling in the moment of each reading. Therefore, when you’re pulling cards for yourself and a Major Arcana card is present, you might ask yourself what part of me does this card represent? When you work with Tarot in this way, true healing can begin as you identify, integrate, and harmonize each part of oneself.

The Magician is the second card in the Major Arcana, though it is numerically number 1, it follows The Fool who is numerically 0. The Magician is the evolution of chaos (The Fool) getting channeled into a physical form. He’s a physical container for the divine, a being who holds all the power of creation at his fingertips, much like Jesus or Adam. Like Jesus, The Magician archetype takes on the role of mentor, but it’s important to recognize that even mentors need support as Gil Stafford points out in his book The Bible & The Tarot, “Magicians need teachers, mentors, guides, and counselors - and in turn, Magicians teach others the way of the pilgrim.” It’s easy to get caught up in the potential and limitless power of The Magician card, but power without direction and guidance often goes awry.

This is why it’s important to tap into The Magician’s ability to detect illusions and clear the mind, symbolized by the yellow background and the infinity symbol above his head. Once we take the time to intentionally clear our minds not only will a path begin to open up for us, but suddenly multiple perspectives and possibilities begin to appear. WE ARE ALL Magicians, we all hold infinite potential and endless energy, but the society in which we live in knows that and it targets our time and energy to distract us from the power we each hold. Our society wants compliance, not individuality, but The Magician empowers us to step into our power and be an active participant in the creation and narrative of our lives.

The Magician is a master at manifesting, probably because he is also a master at being resourceful. The table in front of The Magician holds an item or symbol from each of the four minor arcana suits. Each of these symbols represent not only an element, but a part of the human existence. The wand represents the spiritual realm and the element fire. The sword represents the mind and the element air. The pentacle represents the physical, the flesh, and the element earth. The cup represents emotions and the element water. Like The Magician, we must assess all areas of our life and determine what resources we have accessible to us. What parts of ourselves do we need to sharpen or shine in preparation for the magic we want to bring forth?

Cathy McClelland gives a great summary of the essence of The Magician card in her The Star Tarot, “The Magician acts like a conduit, tapping into the universal forces of inspiration, wonder, and imagination. When he receives the seed of an intention or inspiration, he works out his plan internally with a focused clarity. He then puts it to action with confidence and will. The intention is then transformed into reality.” This outlines the many layers of The Magician, a conduit, an inventor, and a creator all in one form. Just like The Magician, we are all architects of our own reality and The Magician encourages us to step into our power, identify the resources we have at hand, and begin to move forward. Turn mistakes into musings and keep creating!

THE CONDUIT : THE INTERCESSOR

The Conduit or Intercessor represents the "middleman" of the universe, they embody the active flow of spirit into matter, acting as a lightning rod for divine inspiration. These two archetypes example “As Above, So Below”, signified on the Magician card by one hand pointing to the sky and one to the earth. These archetypes recognize that they do not own the power, rather are vessels/channels for the divine to work through them.

Examples: The Pythia (Oracle of Delphi), Mother Teresa (Historical Figure), Buffy (Buffy the Vampire Slayer), Hestia (Greek Mythology), Moses (The Old Testament)

THE ALCHEMIST : THE ARCHITECT

The Alchemist and the Architect both utilize knowledge and resources to produce a new outcome. While the Alchemist might transmute more internal and unseen structures, the Architect actualizes the physical transformation from plans to progress.

Examples: Neo (The Matrix), Santiago (The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho), Tony Stark (Iron Man), John Hammond (Jurassic Park), Hermes (Greek Mythology)

THE MENTOR : THE MASTER

The Mentor and the Master archetypes represent self-mastery and the transition from theoretical knowledge to lived wisdom. These archetypes signify the power of the expert who has transcended the role of student to command their craft with effortless precision.

Examples: Merlin (Arthurian Legend), Alysa Liu (Modern Historical Figure), Chiron (Greek Mythology), Anne Sullivan (Historical Figure), Gandalf (Lord of the Rings), Jesus of Nazareth (The New Testament, The Gospels), Yoda (Star Wars)

The following images are different examples of The Magician in various tarot decks. Don’t forget to pull out your own decks and compare as well!

While observing the images, ask yourself the following questions:

How do they compare?

What colors are used the most?

Are there any common symbols used in each card?

How does each representation make you FEEL?

Is there a particular representation of The Fool that you resonate with the most?

Why do you think this version speaks to you?

If you were to design your own magician card, what symbolism would you include?

Guided Visualization

For best results, have somebody else read to you OR record yourself reading this visualization and then play back for yourself.

Find a comfortable position—seated or lying down. Allow your eyes to close softly. Take a slow, deep breath in through your nose…Hold for a moment…And exhale gently through your mouth. Again—inhale calm… Exhale tension. Let your body settle. Let your mind soften.

Now, imagine yourself standing at the edge of a quiet clearing. The air is warm, still, and alive with possibility. There is a sense that something meaningful is about to happen here. As you step forward, you notice a figure in the center of the clearing. This is The Magician. They stand before a table, and on the table are four sacred tools:

A wand, a cup, a sword, and a pentacle. Fire, water, air, and earth. Action, emotion, thought, and form. You realize these tools are not separate from you. They represent your abilities. Your will. Your feelings. Your mind. Your body.

The Magician looks at you—not with judgment, but with deep recognition. They see your potential. Above their head floats the symbol of infinity, glowing softly. A reminder: your creative power is not limited. It flows through you.

Now, the Magician gestures for you to step closer. As you do, you feel something awaken in your chest—a warm, steady light. This is your inner authority. Your agency. Your capacity to choose. The Magician speaks: "You are not here to wait. You are here to shape."

They invite you to place your hands on the table. As you do, the tools begin to glow. The wand pulses with purpose. The cup hums with emotional truth. The sword sharpens your clarity. The pentacle steadies your grounding. You feel these energies flow into you—integrating, aligning. Now, the Magician asks you silently: What do you wish to create?

Not what others expect. Not what feels safe. But what feels true. Let an image, word, or feeling arise. There is no wrong answer. Notice how your body responds as you hold this intention. The Magician raises their hand, pointing upward. Then gently lowers it, pointing to the earth. "As above, so below," they remind you. "Your inner world shapes your outer world." You feel the intention settle into your body—into your hands, your breath, your heart. It becomes real. Before you leave, the Magician places something in your palm. It may be a symbol, an object, a word, or simply a feeling. This is a reminder of your power.

When you’re ready, step back from the table. Thank the Magician. The clearing begins to fade. Feel your breath again. Your body. The surface beneath you. Wiggle your fingers and toes gently. And when you’re ready…Open your eyes.
